Studio Architects: REFURBISHMENT

The local branch library for Cadbury Heath, on the outskirts of Bristol was badly in need of a complete refit, the provision of improved access, and a new children’s reading area.

The original building, dating from the 1960s, had survived well although the copper roof finish had long gone and the interior had suffered intermittent redecoration.

Our approach to replanning the facilities suggested a new front entrance area and children's space close to the library control desk. The extension to provide the children's space connected at the transom below the clerestory glazing, maintaining the clarity of the original design.

Within a very limited budget a thoroughly successful renovation has been achieved, with a complete transformation of the main library space through new lighting, and a colour scheme that integrates the new interior finishes with the new book-stacks and furnishings.

The Contract was let following a competitive tender and carried out in 20 weeks.
