The school has been progressively refurbishing its science laboratories in the S-block, built as part of an overall development in the 1950s, as part of the ‘Science in the Twenty-first Century’ programme. This work is long overdue since many laboratories retain their original fittings and furniture and, as such, are unable to adapt to current teaching practice.
Two laboratories were to be formed in the current phase by internal alterations to create adequate space to provide the flexible arrangements of service bollards and student’s table required by the brief.
Safety floor finishes and acoustic ceilings were installed to improve both safety as well as teaching environment.
This work followed the adjacent extension of the school Hall, to more than double its capacity for essential activities such as dining and examination space, and the creation of new Changing Rooms for sports activities. The displaced drama facilities were located, during this phase of the works, in former kitchen spaces on the site.
