The new buildings proposed for the site are intended to combine the qualities associated with riverside workshops with residential buildings, and do not attempt to be traditional. They would maintain the current diverse range of materials used in the locality, but combining them in a more contemporary way, to be buildings of our time.

The drawings illustrate the plans and elevations, showing how the design is based on 3 units arranged around a shared courtyard, each unit having a ground floor workshop/studio. The proposal is based on the increasing tendency for small ‘starter’ businesses to have serviced workshop space attached to a home, suitable for craft businesses, home office use, or high technology based industries that do not produce noise pollution, large amounts of waste materials, or require heavy goods deliveries.

The proposed scheme is designed to fit within the Conservation Area where natural materials predominate and by the quality of the design, to enhance the setting of the adjoining neighbours and create an attractive courtyard-based development that will provide opportunities for new businesses based on working from home.
